Who Impela is for
Impela is a coaching tool. It helps you get clear about what you want, figure out what’s in the way, and actually follow through.
The interface looks familiar — if you’ve used ChatGPT, Claude, or any AI chat tool, you’ll know what to do. But Impela is not a chatbot. It’s not therapy. It’s not a friend. It’s not going to tell you what you want to hear.
How Impela is different from a chatbot
The interface looks like a chat. Underneath, it’s a different thing.
ChatGPT, Claude, Replika, Pi, and other AI chat tools are built to be helpful, agreeable, and pleasant. They answer almost any question you ask. They tell you your idea is interesting. They match the tone you bring. They forget most of what you said last week.
Coaching is the opposite of that.
Here’s what Impela does that a general-purpose chatbot doesn’t:
- It remembers everything you’ve said, on purpose, and you can see it. Every conversation builds on every prior conversation. Patterns get noticed. Decisions get tracked. You can read what the system thinks it knows about you, and you can edit it.
- It follows up.If you said you’d have a hard conversation by Friday, you’ll hear from Impela about it. A chatbot waits for you to come back. Impela comes to you.
- It pushes back. When you’re avoiding something, looking for permission you don’t need, or asking the wrong question, Impela will say so. We’ve built it to be honest, even when that means being uncomfortable.
- It has a method.Coaching is structured work — figure out what’s actually going on, identify what’s in the way, agree on a small number of next steps, follow through. Impela uses that approach. Chatbots don’t have one.
- It’s not built to keep you hooked.Impela isn’t trying to maximize the time you spend in it. The goal is for you to get clearer, do the work, and need it less over time. That’s the opposite of how most AI products are designed.
How it’s different from therapy or advice
Therapytreats mental health conditions. A therapist is a licensed clinician — they can diagnose, they can treat, and they’re trained to handle things like depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, and crisis. Impela does none of that.
Adviceis when someone tells you what to do based on what worked for them. Impela doesn’t do that. We don’t think we know your life better than you do, and we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all answers.
Impela does make recommendations — but they’re built from your situation. The people involved, what you’ve already tried, what you actually want, what you can and can’t change. Generic advice says “set better boundaries” or “have the hard conversation.” Coaching helps you figure out what to do this week, in your life, given everything else that’s going on. And it helps you figure out how to do it — in a way that fits your personality, your style, what you’re naturally good at. The next step has to fit your life. Not someone else’s.
Coachingis something else. It’s a structured way to think out loud with something that asks better questions than you’d ask yourself, points out things you’re missing, and holds you to what you said you’d do. The work is yours. Impela makes the work easier to do.
Impela is for you if
- You have something in your life or work you want to change, and you’ve been stuck on it for a while.
- You don’t want an AI that agrees with everything you say.
- You’re willing to do the work. Coaching is not a quick fix.
- You want a record of what you’ve worked through, what you’ve decided, and what you committed to. Sessions build on each other. Nothing gets forgotten.
- You want something to follow up. To check in on the things you said mattered, even when you’d rather drop them.
It works whether the thing you’re stuck on is at home, at work, or somewhere in between. Most people use it across both.
Impela isn’t for you if
- You’re in a mental health crisis. Stop reading this and go to the section below.
- You’re managing a diagnosed mental health condition without a clinician.Impela isn’t a substitute for treatment. If you have a therapist, work with them. Impela can sit alongside that work. It can’t replace it.
- You want a friend or a companion.Replika, Pi, and similar AI tools are designed for that. Impela isn’t. It’s there to do work with you, not to keep you company.
- You want an AI that validates everything you say.Impela is built to push back when pushing back is what you need. If you want a tool that tells you you’re right, almost any other chatbot will do that better.
- You’re under 18. Impela is for adults.

What Impela helps with
Impela covers eight areas of life: relationships, parenting, health, work and career, money, time and energy, personal growth, and how you lead. You don’t need all eight. Most people start with one or two that matter most right now and grow into others over time.
Inside each area, Impela helps with what you’re actually trying to figure out — a specific decision, a pattern you keep falling into, a relationship that isn’t working, a goal you can’t seem to start, a habit you can’t seem to keep.
What you get out of it
Clearer thinking. Decisions you can stand behind. Follow-through.
In practice, that looks like:
- A clearer picture of what you actually want — not what you think you should want.
- Honest answers about what’s getting in the way, including things about yourself you might not love hearing.
- A small number of concrete commitments you’ve made to yourself, written down where you can see them.
- Patterns surfaced over weeks and months — the kind of thing only something with memory can give you.
- Check-ins between sessions so the work doesn’t disappear the moment you close the app.
Bottom line
If you want a tool that takes you seriously, won’t lie to you, and treats your life like the complicated thing it is — that’s what we’re building.
If you want a chatbot, a friend, a therapist, or a place to vent without being challenged — we’re not it. There are good resources for those things and we’ll point you at them.
